Biker jackets in Brooklyn

I’m writing this on May 9th, during the plane journey home (in between catching up on episodes of Radio Four’s Women’s Hour podcast and reading Amy Poehler’s Yes Please) already thinking about when I’ll next be able to visit New York.

Mile-wise, the Big Apple sits almost squarely between San Francisco and the UK, making it an ideal meeting point for friends and family who can’t make it out to the West Coast, which was the reason for this particular holiday. My good friend P had planned a New York State road trip with her boyfriend and when she mentioned that they would be staying in Brooklyn for part of the trip, I couldn’t wait to join them.

We spent a day wandering around Brooklyn last year but barely scratched the surface due to staying in Manhattan’s Midtown. For this visit we stayed in an apartment in Williamsburg, where these photos were taken.

We booked through AirBnB with mixed results – our original host backed out just a couple of weeks before the trip and finding a replacement in the same neighborhood was tricky. I was concerned about this apartment as the photos weren’t that great but in the end it was ideal for laying our heads, close to P’s AirBnB and complete with an Instagram-worthy rooftop.

Although we spent time in Manhattan – most notably for the Manus x Machina exhibition at the Met, hanging out with dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History and strolling along the High Line – it was Williamsburg that stole my heart, but more on that in my next post!

I’m terrible at packing for trips of any duration – typically packing too many clothes or not enough, but I figured my leather biker jacket and a pair of floral trousers would serve me well. This particular pair are from Banana Republic and the forest green colour and slim fit make them feel a lot more grown up than other floral prints I own. Not seen in these photos – my cheap-as-chips umbrella that turned itself inside out numerous times thanks to periodically apocalyptic rain…

Love seeing your awesome style again, Sarah. And that bag! I love it! Your trip to NY sounds like it was great, I’d love to get back there again soon, there’s so much to do and so much to see, I feel like we’ve only scraped the surface.

Thank you! I completely agree – it’s one of those cities that just always has something new to discover.
