Rock The Week #99

Fashion related (and totally non-fashion related) things that have made my world go round over the last seven days…

Hula hoop performerHooping Mad

As if my dream of running away to join the circus wasn’t already fuelled by taking aerial silks classes, this week I tried my hand, or should that be hips, at hula hooping. Clearly I have a long way to go before I perform like the woman in this picture, but I was pleasantly surprised to be able to keep the hoop in motion for longer than 10 seconds!

Hyde & Co

After watching a gig on Friday night a group of friends and I stumbled through a faux bookcase and into a Hyde 7 Co, a 1920s speakeasy style bar located just of the Clifton Triangle. You have to knock to enter, the cocktails are more like magical potions than pina coladas, and every party is treated to table service from exceptionally well dressed bar staff. It’s an incredibly fun atmosphere and the table service ensures that the venue is never crowded.

This week I’ve been…

Blogging about: The ludicrously delightful piece of headgear that is my black cat hat, plus my current favourite lip product to rival Revlon’s Just Bitten/ColourBurst offerings.

Listening to: Dan le Sac VS Scroobious Pip – the hip-hop duo played a sold-out show at the Anson Rooms on Friday night and I couldn’t help but dance along to anthems such as Get Better and Thou Shalt Always Kill.

Watching: Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I started re-watching Buffy and co from the beginning and yesterday afternoon I binged on the last four episodes of season two. The moment when Buffy has to sacrifice Angel to save the world is as heartbreaking as it was when I was a teenager.

Reading: The San Francisco guidebook I picked up last weekend – I can’t wait till my trip there next month! I also read with interest the opinion piece on Never Underdressed about the laziness with which the fashion press refer to Africa’s countries have influenced fashion trends – well worth a read.

BUFFY! I haven’t rewatched Buffy in a while. I need to get my DVDs out again, clearly.

Hi SJ, really like your blog! I’d love to be able to hula hoop more than 10 seconds, that’s been a sore point for me since I was about 9. Bet it was a good workout!

Hi Jen, thank you for your comment. Hula hooping is great – I couldn’t do it when I was younger so I’m surprised to find it’s going ok now I’m an adult :)
